KUNDUZ WOOL
The Kunduz sheep is a breed of domesticated sheep that is native to the Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan. These sheep are known for their distinctive appearance and exceptional wool quality. They're medium sized with a long and thick woolly coat in a few colors and a variety of shades. The wool of Kunduz sheep is highly valued for its softness, warmth, and durability, making it ideal for producing high-quality textiles and clothing items. Kunduz sheep are well-adapted to the harsh mountainous climate of the region and are known for their hardiness and resistance to diseases. They are primarily raised by local farmers for subsistence purposes, but their wool is also traded in local markets, and now--here.
VEGETABLE DYES
Afghan kilim are famous for their vibrant colors which they owe to natural vegetable dyes. These dyes are derived from various plant sources, such as roots, bark, flowers, and leaves, and have been used for centuries by traditional artisans. The process of dyeing the wool involves meticulous preparation of the dye baths, where the plant materials are boiled to extract their pigments. The wool is then immersed in these dye baths, allowing the fibers to absorb the natural colors. This traditional method not only creates rich and distinctive hues but also ensures that the dyes are environmentally friendly and non-toxic. The resulting wool rugs boast a unique blend of earthy tones and vibrant shades, adding warmth and character to any space. The use of natural vegetable dyes in our Afghan kilim showcases the region's rich history and culture, while helping save the environment by not polluting bodies of water with toxic industrial chromium dyes.
